[FILL] Bakugou - childhood trauma over quirk accident TW Graphic Descriptions of Burns

(Anonymous) 2018-07-05 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
OOOOOOOOOO anon here. This hurt too much not to try a hand at, though it's not all that long. Here's fourteen hundred words of angst. Trigger Warning for graphic description of burns and a very limited description of a panic attack.

Fingers of foreboding creep up the back of Bakugo’s neck at the thought of removing his gloves. The UA hero course is everything he’s wanted since he was three and crowded around the Midoriya’s computer with Izuku watching All Might save civilians. But that doesn’t mean he can trust his quirk. It’s dangerous and unpredictable, more liable to hurt the people around him than any villain he’s pursuing.

He’s reminded of that every time he sees his best friend’s arm. He can never get away from the web of raised pink scar tissue that cups Izuku’s right elbow. It peeks out from under the edges of his sleeves when he pushes them up on warm days and is on full display whenever the two go to the gym.

Izuku is no longer bothered by it, plans to be a hero despite lacking both a quirk and full range of motion in his ruined elbow. Katsuki had gone to all of Izuku’s physical therapy appointments with him for the year and a half they’d been required and had helped him with the upkeep ever since. That injury was his fault and he’d be damned if he didn’t help Izuku overcome it. He would be helping Izuku even if that meant he had to use his quirk again.

None of that meant he was prepared to take his gloves off. He was surrounded by extras whose quirks wouldn’t protect them from an explosion. Surrounded by people he might hurt.

He flinched as his palms started sparking under his gloves.

Izuku wasn’t even in his section, so he’d have to trust that insufferable nerd to make it on his own. The insufferable nerd who had somehow gotten himself a trainer and bulked up under his preferred baggy clothes.

For now, he pulled his gloves off one finger at a time, trying very hard to focus on what Present Mic was saying. But everyone was running forward, jumping over each other to get the most points. A moment’s hesitation left Katsuki in the dust, playing catch up as he found trashed robots left in pieces all along the city roadways. He hit his stride as one of the large two pointers rounded the corner in front of him and he let loose one of his explosions from crackling palms.

He was doing fine as long as the other hopefuls stayed out of his path, but any time he came across another student, the sight of third-degree burns and ruined flesh had him stifling his explosions and cussing at them for getting in his way. Better that they hate him than leave his company in a body bag.

One girl, with bright pink skin and hair, ran into his path right as he let loose a blast of heat. It passed her by a hair’s breadth, but all Katsuki could see was the fire hitting her full on and her pink skin blistering to black. His breathing picked up and his brain started to fizzle out into screaming. He thought he might have fallen into a crouch, but he was losing his connection to his body and he couldn’t quite feel his fingers properly.

Were there hands on his shoulders? He looked up and saw past his blurry vision to the pink-skinned girl from before leaning over him.

“Are you alright there?” She needed to stay away from him; he was dangerous. Over her shoulder he saw the same three pointer, now armless, speeding towards them on massive wheels.

He shoved her out of the way and threw himself at the robot, blasting it from above after a massive jump. Katsuki was breathing hard as he landed, but he turned back to the girl and yelled back, “Worry about your damn self,” before hurrying away, shaken.

The test ended well enough, a strong fifty-three points felt like enough to make it through, but his useless best friend was nowhere to be found, despite his leaning against the front gate for nearly an hour. He adjusted his gloves no fewer than five times while he waited, still hyped up from too many close calls during the exam. When Izuku finally came out, he was limping and cradling his right arm. Katsuki nearly lost it.

“Oi, shit nerd! The hell happened your arm there!” He was ready to carry Izuku home on his back if he needed to. Trust his nerd to get hurt without him there to watch over him, trust him to push himself too far without Katsuki there to keep him in check.

Izuku laughed him off, he always did, and pushed his good hand through his messy hair. “Relax, Kacchan, it’s just a little sore from the test.” Despite protests, Katsuki shoved a too long sleeve up to examine Izuku’s ruined arm. He’d been expecting to feel the tightness in thin, corded muscles that he’d been taught to notice when he helped with the physical therapy; instead, he saw what appeared to be a full arm bruise. All the skin, fingertips up past where the sleeve covered, was blooming into purples and blues.

Katsuki snarled up into his best friend’s guileless face. “This doesn’t look like a little bit of soreness, fucker. Your mom will lose her damn mind if you come home like this.” He grabbed Izuku’s left wrist, deceptively gentle, and began dragging him towards his home where a well-stocked first aid kit waited.

He couldn’t even bring himself to look at his friend. All he could see was back when he’d been in the hospital, hooked up to an IV and so hopped up on pain medication he couldn’t manage a conversation.

Initially, Katsuki had been proud of his quirk, the perfect blend of his mother’s glycerin and his father’s combustive sweat. He’d been proud of the tiny explosions that impressed all of the kids in his class. That had lasted as long as the explosions had remained small. As they grew, kids had started giving him a wider berth, still impressed, but also worried. He began worrying when he realized his quirk reacted violently to his anger. He tried to stay away from the other kids, unwilling to risk his emotions.

But Izuku had always been too persistent for his own good. It had taken one bad day. He’d been cranky from the heat, and the vending machine had been out of all his favorite drinks, plus some older kids had kicked him off the climbing wall at the playground. The icing on the cake had been Izuku chattering uselessly at him while they were walking home together.

He could barely remember the incident beyond the feeling of horror, the smell of burning flesh, and the sight of skin blackening and pulling away from stark white bone.

He’d been told afterward that he’d imagined that last part, that the burn was bad, but hadn’t hit bone. That didn’t change the way his memory had warped after countless nightmares. That didn’t change how Izuku flinched away from him after the fact, body remembering the pain even if he wouldn’t admit it.

Katsuki’s first attempt at suppressing his quirk had been a dismal failure. He’d tried to wear normal winter gloves that he snuck on when his mother hadn’t been looking. They’d just caused him to sweat more, and they’d melted onto his hand when they’d inevitably ignited. He’d ended up in the burn ward next to Izuku, though his injury hadn’t been as severe.

Luckily, or so his doctors told him, his mother knew someone with a healing quirk from her work who was willing to fix his hands. Unlike Izuku, he was only left with minimal scarring from the incident. He’d been discharged and, upon reaching home, his mother had presented him the prototypes for his gloves, designed with a combination of her scientific prowess to suppress the ignition properties of his sweat and his father’s design skills to fit his still growing hands snuggly.

The newest version of those same gloves fought against his quirk as he raged against Izuku for his recklessness. Fucking nerd couldn’t take care of his damn self without Katsuki there. And Katsuki couldn’t trust himself to be there. Not a quirk as destructive as his was. Not with a symbol of his weakness winking at him from under rolled up sleeves.

But Katsuki would try. Katsuki might be making up for his weakness for the rest of his life, but he would make up for it, quirk be damned.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah oh my God! This is so wonderful! Gosh I love Katsuki's weird combination of protectiveness and fear over hurting Izuku, the whole glove thing, and the bit with Mina and it's all just so good! Thank you so much!
